CANON PERSONALITY:
“The people of this district are rotten on the inside. If I stay here I’ll never be free. I’m so ashamed to have been born a noble”
Despite having been born into a noble family in Goa, a country where status is everything, Sabo quickly became of the opinion that no privilege was worth living with parents who only cared about what he could do for them as their heir and never really about him. Running away from home at the age of five to live at the trash heap people like his parents viewed with despise and scorn only confirmed it. At least out there you could be free. Growing up there, surviving and thriving by hunting in the jungle and robbing his fellow thugs, brought him into contact with a lot of the horrible things people can do to each other but it’s not until his father finds him and brings him ‘home’ that he begins to fully understand the cruelty and injustices humans are capable of. Finding out that his parents as well as every other noble are willing to burn down the trash heap along with every person living there while still happily going on with their lives nearly breaks him. It’s an environment he cannot bear to stay in and he’s afraid that if he does the life he’ll be forced to live will suffocate him and change him into someone he’s not and will never want to be. Which, ultimately, is what makes him run away not only from his parents but from the country and the island itself.
Seeing the horrors and discrimination carried out in Goa and experiencing them first hand - both as someone from the privileged class seeing all those around him treating those of a lower class as nothing more than trash, as something worthless that would be better off just being destroyed, and as someone whose mother slapped him for defending himself against another child armed with a knife simply because the child was of a higher rank - as well as through his brother who is pretty much universally hated simply because of who his father was has made him very passionate about injustices. This is a passion that has stayed with him even without the memories that first caused them, and joining the revolutionary army and seeing just how much more of it there is in the world has only made it stronger.
Having been brought up as a noble he shows a greater knowledge of and adherence to good manners and being polite when with his brothers as a child. As an adult he seems to have pretty much abandoned all of them, possibly as an act of defiance or as a way -possibly unconsciously- of distancing himself from a heritage he’s ashamed of, except perhaps for when a mission calls for it.
“My fingers are like the claws of a dragon. Claws to tear away power from the conceited!”
He’s not afraid of working hard, at least not if it’s for a cause or a reason he can believe in. The revolutionary army fits that bill for him where he’s managed to climb to the position of chief of staff by the time he’s turned twenty. The revolutionary army fights against the injustices of the world government and hopes to overthrow it one day. With Sabo’s greatest dream being freedom and how his experiences in Goa has shaped him, even if he no longer remembers them, it’s not really strange that he finds a good home with them after their leader, Dragon, saves his life and growing up with them from the age of ten has only made him more devoted to their cause.
While he’s a pretty good leader - he wouldn’t have made it to the position of second in command, answerable only to Dragon himself if this wasn’t the case - Sabo does have a tendency to go off script when out in the field. This often leaves his two closest friends and colleagues Hack and Koala to deal with the aftermath with a mix of annoyance, exasperation and resignation because no matter how many times they tell him off about it, it never seems to make any difference the next time he takes off. It’s come to a point that if Hack suddenly feels the ground beginning to shake his first words to Koala will be a question about what foolish stunt Sabo has pulled this time. Despite all of this Sabo would not describe himself as reckless, though in all probability Hack and Koala would, mostly because in comparison he doesn’t consider himself as reckless as his brothers.
Sabo’s shown to be capable of a great deal of compassion and kindness, especially towards people in need and those suffering from injustices.
When relaxed Sabo can be rather goofy, however he’s able to immediately shift into a much more serious work mode when it’s required of him. This shows that he’s pretty skilled at compartmentalizing which is both good and bad. The good parts are that it allowed him to be a carefree goofball when circumstances allows for it, or at least mostly allows for it. On the other hand it also allows him to ignore certain issues he probably would be better of addressing in the long run. One of the places this becomes most visible is on the battlefield where he sometimes show a cruel and sadistic side that doesn’t seem to appear anywhere else, like attempting to crack a person’s skull ‘like an egg’.
He doesn’t like his burn scars and even grew out his hair so that it would help cover up the one over his eye. This is probably also the reason why, when dressed in his own clothes, he’s very covered up.
“If Luffy ever came to me for help I would rush to his side no matter where he was”
He’s very protective about the things he cares about, and there will never be anything more important to him than his brothers. Even as a child he’s prepared to give up all his dreams and the freedom he yearns for in exchange for their life being spared and later, finding out that they’re still in danger, doesn’t stop trying to get to them until he’s beaten so badly he’s hardly able to move. As an adult he stands in the way of an admiral, which makes him one of the most powerful marines there is, and what could very well be an entire platoon of marines to prevent them from going after Luffy and his crew. And while he makes it clear that these are the actions of an older brother and not those of a high ranking member of the revolutionary army, he also readily admits to his close colleague and friend that he’s willing to risk getting the revolutionary army involved with a war they have no current plans of getting involved in if that’s what it takes to save his brother.
The fact that he’s willing to go to such extreme lengths to protect Luffy probably partly has to do with the fact that, due to his memory loss, he was not able to do anything to save Ace’s life and he’s determined that he’s never going to go through something like that again. Even though it’s been over two years since Ace died Sabo’s still struggling with the emotional fallout, and especially with his feelings of guilt. He blames himself for not being there, unable to help wondering if him being there would have made a difference, and until their meeting is sure that Luffy will blame him too, thinking he’d punch him straight away. He also admits, while fighting Burgess, a member of the crew that turned Ace over to the marines, that he’s been thinking every night about how Ace felt when he died.
Even though he’ll never get to see Ace again he does seem to feel some kind of spiritual connection to him. To his mind the reason he got his memories back at all was because Ace’s spirit helped him remember so that even though Ace is dead Luffy will still have an older brother to look after him. This also seems to be part of the reason why it’s vital to him to get Ace’s fire fruit. He, and presumably the rest of the revolutionary army, have been searching for it ever since Sabo regained his memories and by gaining it he believes he will also inherit Ace’s will. If this is actually the case or not is still unclear. Sabo does say, after having used one of Ace’s signature attacks on Burgess, that while he might not care ‘Ace says he doesn’t forgive you’. However there is no way of knowing if there actually was some kind of spiritual exchange between them through the fire or if this is just an expression of Sabo’s unresolved emotional issues about Ace.
His protective feelings doesn’t only show itself if physical actions. While they’re children together, Sabo takes on the role of the somewhat more calm and rational one. Because Luffy and Ace’s brand of stubbornness inclines them to butt heads often and repeatedly it’s usually up to Sabo to step in between or otherwise interrupt them to get things back on track. He’s seen trying to hold Ace back in volatile situations, both verbal and physical. Luffy at one point refers to him as the ‘nicer’ brother, as he tends to be more positive and encouraging about Luffy’s abilities in contrast to Ace’s (very) tough love approach. This can also be seen when he and Luffy meet again, twelve years later. While the reunion is extremely emotional for both of them it’s very obvious that Sabo’s priority is Luffy and Luffy’s feelings, not his own. While Luffy openly cries and expresses his own lingering guilt over not being able to prevent Ace’s death Sabo remains calm and smiling during the entire encounter. Instead of sharing his own feelings of guilt he does his best to absolve Luffy of his and reassures him of how glad he is that Luffy’s alive and thanks him for surviving. His own tears doesn’t make an appearance until Luffy has left and even then he’s trying his best to deny them, partly because he’s a bit embarrassed by them and partly because now really isn’t the time.
It’s also important to remember that while there is nothing Sabo wouldn’t do to protect his brother should he need or ask for it, he also has a lot of faith and confidence, not to mention pride, in that in the face of most dangers Luffy will be fine fighting his own battles with the support of his crew with no need for big brother to swoop in and try to save the day. Which means that when it comes to the final battle of Dressrosa he has no problems with taking on Burgess, who while not exactly someone one could simply term as ‘small fry’ is hardly one of the more challenging opponents of the arc, and leaving Doflamingo, the big bad boss, for Luffy to deal with.
‘Because now really isn’t the time’ is probably an excuse he uses quite a bit when the subject touches upon his feelings and emotional well being, though not necessarily with those exact words, because while he’s pretty good at compartmentalizing his emotions he doesn’t seem to be very good at dealing with them. He spent the years ten to twenty remembering nothing about his life before that and then suddenly, with the news of the death of a brother he until then hadn’t even known he had, it all comes back to him. Just the shock to his system caused him to be unconscious for three days. During the two years that have passed between then and finally meeting Luffy again the only thing we know of what he’s been up to is working with the revolutionaries, searching for Ace’s devil fruit and, once, visiting Ace’s grave to give him news of Luffy’s reappearance before going off on another revolutionary mission. There is no signs of him trying to contact Luffy before their chance meeting in Dressrosa. In fact even there he’s shown to be somewhat hesitant about approaching him since he feels that his previous memory loss and failure to help save Ace may have lost him the right to call himself their brother. While he eventually does approach him, it’s ultimately more for Luffy’s (and possibly Ace’s) sake than for his own. And the fact that he later, after all the fighting is done, goes to see Luffy before he leaves decides not to wake him up and instead tells his story to Luffy’s crew to pass on to him indicates that for all that he would go to the ends of the earth to protect him Sabo still doesn’t quite know how just to be with him.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
Devil fruit user, mera mera no mi (flame-flame fruit). He can create, control and turn into fire at will. “Normal” attacks won’t hurt him, since his body will automatically turn into fire on impact without any conscious thought on his part. Being submerged in water makes him unable to use his abilities and weakens him physically. How much he’s weakened depends on how much of him is submerged. Seastone (a substance from his home world) have the same effect. Rain and dripping water, however, do not.
Kenbunshoku/Observational Haki: The ability to sense other people’s presence, even if they’re concealed or too far away to be seen naturally, as well as their strength. Can also be used to predict an opponent's moves shortly before they make them. Has also been shown to enable other users to sense, and empathise with, the emotions and nature of others.
Busoshoku/Armament Haki: The ability to use one’s spirit life force to create an invisible armor around oneself. In addition to being used for protection it can also be used to strengthen attacks, making them immensely more powerful. It can also be imbued into weapons to increase their durability and effectiveness. This haki also has the ability to bypass the powers of a devil fruit user whose body has been affected by their ability, like Sabo himself, and cause damage. A heavy concentration of armament haki can be used to harden parts of the body, turning the area black, making the user’s armor even more durable and their attacks even more powerful. Since this ability draws its power from its users spirit life force it can be vulnerable to depletion. How quickly this happens depends on the user’s original spiritual power, training and usage.
Coming from a shounen canon Sabo has, what in a more normal setting, would be considered supernatural speed, strength, agility, and endurance. He’s also an extremely skilled fighter and favors hand to hand combat mixed with stick fighting, his weapon of choice being a steel pipe. His skills as a fighter, as well as his fightingstyle, began to develop at the early age of five due to the harsh and ruthless environment he grew up in after running away from home. At age ten he, and his friend/brother Ace (also aged 10), were feared by most adult thugs in the area and regularly took down giant alligators for lunch. These skills stayed with him even after he lost his memory and ended up with the Revolutionary Army where he, still around age ten, was able to win against Hack, a fishman and instructor in fishman karate 16 years his senior. After that he was taken on by the army’s leader, Dragon, who presumably trained him in both fighting and haki and under whose tutelage he either learned or developed himself the fighting style Ryusoken. The Ryusoken style focuses on holding your fingers in a claw-like fashion and crushing your opponents with a powerful grip. Imbued with Busoshoku haki Sabo can use this technique crush his enemies weapons and armor, a giants steel helmet and head “like an egg” and even an entire colosseum.
Considering that he, by the age of twenty, has reached the rank Chief of Staff and is answerable only the Dragon himself he reasonably posses good leadership and organisational skills as well as experience with tactical planning and undercover work. Similarly living in a world where most travel happen by sea he most likely knows how to navigate, or at least navigation as it works in One Piece!verse, and how to operate a ship. As a child he and his brothers are shown to be able to live mostly self sufficient at the ages ten and seven, including building a large and sturdy treehouse to live in.

AU HISTORY:
Born into a military family. His father is a marine and his mother is a housewife, both with military parents and grandparents.
Grew up on various military bases all over the country and has consequently made friends all over. Many of which he’s still in contact with.
Spent years seven to eleven in Germany.
Overall ignored/neglected by his parents, unless he misbehaved, he’s been mostly raised by different neighbours, family friends, his friends’ parents and other military personnel.
One of which got him involved with charity and volunteer work at fourteen.
Began practicing acrobatics at age ten, and has kept it up as well as possible, and parkour at age seventeen.
Did decent at school but excelled at only a few subjects.
While he’s always had problems controlling his anger it got badly out of hand when he entered puberty. It led to a number of bad, and pretty brutal, fights and it’s only due to his father’s influence he didn’t end up with a police record. One particularly bad incident made the authorities put their foot down more firmly, and finally forced his parents admit that this was a problem they couldn’t control, and consequently Sabo was forced into mandatory anger management. He’s worked hard at it since, and is much better now.
Partly because of his struggle to control his anger and violent impulses he ultimately decided not to follow the family tradition of joining the military, resulting in numerous fights with his parents before leaving home.
Moved around a bit, trying to find a place where he felt he could settle down for at least a few years and finally decided on Recollé.
Has lived in Recollé for almost a year.
Makes his living as a freelance writer, writing articles for various magazines/websites, and romance novels (under a pen name).
Adopted a pomeranian puppy six months ago, called Kiwi
Spends most of his free time training and playing with his dog or doing charity and/or volunteer work.
AU PERSONALITY:
Growing up in the AU Sabo’s relationship with his parents has been far from good and they spend most of the time ignoring him they’ve still managed to build more of a relationship with him than his canon parents. So while he doesn’t get along at all with them, and doesn’t think he ever will, and while he doesn’t even really like them much there’s still some love there which makes their relationship more complicated than his canon one.
Also, while his dad’s job meant that he moved around a lot as a kid and neither of his parents could really be counted on to be there for him he’s still always had a pretty good support system to help him along the way. It may not always have consisted of the same people but he’s still always had someone to talk to about whatever has been bothering him.
His more complicated and long lasting relationship with his parents, along with his attempts to get their attention when younger has led to him having more of a short fuse temper. On the other hand his constant support system, his support system not consisting of either bandits of members of a revolutionary army, and the fact that you can’t really get away with his kind of brawling in this society as you can in his canon means that he’s had to deal with his issues in a much more direct way. As a result au Sabo has grown up to be both more emotionally mature and emotionally aware than his canon self.
It’s also the reason why his none of his chosen activities involve any kind of martial art or style of fighting and why he ultimately decided not to join the military.
In canon Sabo has seen many of the horrible things that can be seen. This is not the case in the au. Working closely with soldiers returning from combat he’s seen the aftermath of it but never the actual thing. So his knowledge of it in the au could be considered less personal and also less, or at least differently, traumatic.
Because his upbringing hasn’t made him hate and despise everything his parents are and stand for he’s hold on to most of his manners this time. Not that he can’t be flippant from time to time but he prefers not to be accidentally rude to people.

SAMPLE
Sabo focused on the feeling of his feet hitting the ground as he turned in on yet another lap around the track closest to his home. Running usually helped to clear his mind and just focus on the repetitive movements his body made once he'd settled into a suitable rhythm until whatever it was he was fretting over faded into the background but tonight it was proving difficult. He'd already been out here longer than he'd planned and he had no doubt that he would be paying for it the following day, not only for the hours of sleep he'd lost but he would also be very surprised if, come morning, there was a single body part that did not ache. He was almost beginning to wonder if he shouldn't just have followed through with his initial impulse which was to go and find somewhere where he could get properly hammered. But he had an early meeting with his editor the next morning and there was no way he was going to turn up to that with a hangover. Besides cruel experienced had taught him that no matter how tempting the idea might be actually executing it wasn't going to lead him anywhere good. And since it was way too late for him to find anything else to do, running had been the only viable backup plan.
Kiwi, his Pomeranian dog, had been ecstatic with joy at getting an extra walk and had kept a good pace beside him for a couple of laps and was now snuggly secured against him in a carrier, her small body a warm and reassuring weight against his chest. Sabo was pretty sure she was sleeping which was something he would very much like to do instead of trying to run away his frustrations in the chilly autumn night.
There had been an email from his father in his inbox this morning. The message within had been short and to the point, no enquiries about how he was getting on, or how he was feeling. Not that he had expected any but no matter how much time passed he still didn't seem to be able to fully squash that small little glimmer of hope that kept saying 'maybe this time'. Just like it seemed that his father would never let go of the futile hope that Sabo had somehow changed his mind and was planning to enlist at the first opportune moment. He hadn't replied yet, mostly because sending back an answer in all caps about how that was never going to happen would only lead to a very angry call very early in the morning and those kind of calls tended to leave him feeling irritable and frustrated for days.
For a short moment his rhythm faltered and he stumbled. It wasn't bad enough for him to hit the ground but it was bad enough to signal that whether his issues had been resolved or not he was done running for tonight. Breathing heavily from the exertion he made his way home. At least the running seemed to have tired him out enough, with any luck he would fall asleep as soon as his head hit the pillow. And with a bit of more luck he would despite all this not oversleep horribly in the morning and then, who knows, if his meeting went well maybe it would put him in a good enough mood that he'd be able to think of something suitable to placate his permanently disappointed father with.
